‘Open Field’ is a body of work that addresses and removes the uniforms we get handed in life. At its core, the work sits in that electric moment when desire first enters the body. The series explores adolescence, instinct and physicality, and the ways sport becomes a place where intimacy, vulnerability and masculinity quietly collide. The project includes former AFL player Mitch Browne alongside LGBTQIA+ sporting pioneer Ian Roberts. Ian was the first Australian rugby league player to come out publicly as gay, in 1995, at a time when that choice came with serious personal and professional consequences. By speaking openly, he confronted long-held assumptions about sexuality in elite sport and helped open space for queer visibility in Australia.
